    Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)

A highly effective treatment approach for children with Autism.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understand and improve socially significant behavior.

ABA appiies behavioral principles to everyday situations that will increase or decrease targeted behaviors.  ABA programs can vary from 20-40 hours per week, depending on the needs of the individual child. ABA techniques have been proven to be a highly effective treatment method for teaching behaviors to individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  ABA focuses on the following:

  • Increasing desired behaviors
  • Teaching new skills such as communication, life and/or social skills
  • Creating self-monitoring procedures such as self-control
  • Instruction on how to generalize or transfer positive behavior
  • Narrowing conditions under which interfering behavior occurs
  • Reducing undesirable behaviors such as self-injury and tantrums

Recent studies show that when receiving 40 hours of ABA services per week for at least 2 years, the vast majority of children show significant improvement while nearly half achieve typical development.

Who can benefit from ABA?

Children experiencing the following could greatly benefit from an ABA program at Cole Academy:

  • Difficulty staying on task and/or following directions
  • Delayed or inappropriate communication skills

  • Issues with toileting and/or self-care
  • Maladaptive behavior such as self-injury
  • Physical and/or verbal aggression
  • Identifying or responding to non-verbal communication
  • How and when to show emotions
  • Sensory issues with light, sound, textures, touch, smell, or temperature
